Hacked account - about resetting password - Guild Wars Forums

So I've been lucky enough to get hacked.
My NCsoft acc got blocked because I couldn't remember the security question that I made waaaaaay back.

Anyway, I contacted support, supplying all my serial keys so I'm kinda confident that I will get my account back.

My worry is that the hacker will log back into my account. I "reset" my password at the login-screen hoping it would disable him to log in. But I'm not sure.

This is in no way a Q_Q thread or anything, I'm simply asking if resetting my password could prevent him from logging in again

Wait until support get back to you. Should be ok if the password was totally changed.

I had to contact support as I forgot the security question and was unable to log in to my ncsoft master account but they were really fast helping me, it took about an hour on a saturday so great work, on the other question I think once its linked to a master that's the only place to change the password, but support should have locked your account the minute they read your ticket.

If you can keep him out, do it, long enough for NC to "ban" your account to prevent any damage the hacker can cause. Then you can provide all of your information to get your NC account and GW account all unlocked. Once you get this taken care of, be responsible about your secure information so that this won't happen again.

i had the same problem 5 y/o NC soft account and couldnt remember the details lol. they are very helpful if u have the Access codes still. u made the smart decision, but it took me 2 days to notice i had been hacked lol. a good reason never to log off of guildwars

Have any idea how you got hacked? You share accoutn info with friends, keylogger, or you do rmt?? I don't get how people can just get hacked...

Just giving out your email can get you 'hacked' if you have an NCSoft account associated with said email. I still don't think you neccessarily need your old password to change it.

Always use at least two separate emails. One private one for things that you want to protect and one completely unrelated dummy that you use to sign up for stuff that are potentially compromising.

I agree. Until you know how you got hacked you're still in danger. Do you have a keylogger? If you've been to shady sites or downloaded a bot then this is a possibility. Have you given the password to a friend or younger brother? They could be the one "hacking" you. And how secure is that password? Did you use something dumb like "guildwars" for your password or is it more complicated?

Many people lately have been hacked because they used the same password for the NCSoft Master account that they used here at guru or on other fansites. The fansites are incredibly easy to hack compared to the official game servers and the stolen passwords from the forums are tried on the game accounts.

I have absolutely no idea. During my 5 years of GW, I've never shared my info with anyone. I don't see how I could possibly get a keylogger since the only GW sites I use are the official pages, wiki and guru. RMT, no.
And yea.. I don't get it either, I've heard about it though.

I'm the only one knowing my password.
And no, my password is strong. I have never changed it for GW though.

That second part makes sense, but that's definately not my case.

Only thing I can think of that could've possibly got me hacked is the Guild Wars Template Builder called paw??ned?? (found in this guru thread: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/p...t10391290.html )
But since I've used this program many times over the years, it doesn't make sense.

Well, is your gw password unique? That's how mine got hacked. I was wise enough to use a strong unique password for my Guild Wars account, but I had completely forgotten about the NCSoft master account. That's an account I set up years ago to get the free storage pane and use the ingame store, yet had never used it otherwise and forgotten about it. I couldn't have told you the password if I tried.

Guru put out a warning a few months ago saying they'd been hacked and that it was possible the hackers got several passwords. In big bold warnings they said to change your GW password if it was the same as Guru. I pretty much ignored it because I knew my gw password was different. Then about a month ago, I got an e-mail that my master account password had been changed and my Guild Wars password reset. GULP!

I contacted support and they immediately locked my accounts. I started researching the master account and discovered I had used the same pw as my guru account. Luckily my ingame name wasn't published on guru so the thieves were never able to login to my gw account, only reset it. I got lucky and learned a lesson.

So, that's the avenue I'd recommend that you explore. Have you used your gw password or NCSoft password elsewhere? If so, how good is the security "elsewhere"?

No way that pawned is infected unless u downloaded it from another site and didnt check the md5

I do use the same password on one other site, but it has nothing to do with Guild Wars :S

Would imagine it must be a keylogger if you never shared your info with anybody else. Before you log back onto GW try to find the keylogger and delete it, if possible try find where you might have gotten it and block that site.

If its a keylogger changing your password wont do anything it will just get this one as soon as you enter it, safest way would be to look for one and remove it before you change your password imo

Now that its reset and you haven't entered it, your account is safe from this person until you log on and off again.

One other possibility that I didn't think about. This happened to a guildie once.

How secure is the PC or Laptop that you use to connect to GW? Are you using a wireless connection? A guy in my guild headed off to his first year of college and the first week he was there his account was stolen. He used the dorm's wireless network to login and someone else in the dorm accessed his PC over the network and stole it.

If you're using a public wireless network, you're at risk.

Or if you're using a computer you don't control the security of, you're at risk. For example, if you use a public computer at your school's computer lab to play GW or if you go over to your best friend Joe's house and log onto your GW account at his house. What if Joe has a keylogger that you're unaware of?

If this is the case then just changing your password will protect you from being hacked again as long as you stay off the problem PCs.
